Smith hopes Rovers can benefit from Giant dip in energy levels

- By JAMES O’BRIEN

TONY Smith has backed Hull KR to take advantage of any dip in energy as Huddersfield Giants prepare for their third game of the Super League season.

Rovers produced big efforts in the opening two rounds and it caught up with them as they suffered a 52-10 hammering at the hands of Leeds Rhinos last week.

Like the Rhinos, Huddersfield benefited from a weekend off caused by Storm Ciara to outlast Salford Red Devils in a close game at the AJ Bell Stadium last weekend.

The Giants have the only remaining unbeaten record in Super League but have yet to play back-to-back matches.

“They’ll be a good test for us and will have some confidence in themselves, but at the same time I’d like to think we’re going to be a good test for them,” said Smith.

“We’ll see if they can handle game three as well.”

New signing Aidan Sezer has claimed maximum Man of Steel points so far, but Smith does not believe his fellow Australian has been particularly eye-catching in his early outings.

“He’s been pretty solid for them without setting the world on fire yet,” said Smith.

“He’s obviously a good character to captain his new club and he’s had a solid start to the season.

“I don’t think we’ve probably seen the best of him yet and I don’t think you’re going to see the best of anybody at this stage of the competition.

“I know he’s caught a couple of headlines and he’s been solid. He’s a good player but I think some of his best will come later in the season when it dries up; I’d like to think some of our best will come a little later in the season as well.”
