Coach offers no defence for Huddersfield horror show

-

SIMON Woolford criticised his side’s defending following Aidan Sezer’s sin-binning – when Giants conceded four tries in a ten-minute period as the game ran away from them.

“We needed to show more resilience, they scored three tries that we should have done better [against], we should have done better, it’s as simple as that.

“We’ve shown some good resilience in defence in the first month, the first three or four weeks.

“Today, as I said, we were put under a bit of pressure and some old habits crept in and we didn’t handle it.

“We didn’t handle it, we knew we would be under more pressure today than we were put under in the first three rounds and first three wins and it’s disappointing we weren’t up to it.”

Giants conceded 38 unanswered points, including a scoreless second half to lose their unbeaten start to 2020.

A lot of these points came when Giants were a man down and although that had a huge impact on the game, Woolford doesn’t want to let that cloud the performance.

“Before Sezer got put in the bin, we were on top, we were up 10-4, we made a few inroads down their middle, we were looking really good.

“In that first 35 minutes we did a few things wrong, we got a few things wrong, but we hung in there and we were in the fight.

“We were leading a good Wigan team but the three tries in five or six minutes before halftime, that’s hard to take.

“Like I said, you can’t pin that on having 12 men, you’ve got to do better, you’ve got to deal with that adversity a lot better.

“It’s probably not the last time this year we’re going to have 12 men, so we need to learn from it.”

Sezer was sent to the sin-bin for a high tackle and the decision to show him a yellow card, rather than just awarding the penalty, angered some Giants fans on the sidelines.

However, Woolford believes the yellow was in-line with other similar incidents so far this season.

“I’m disappointed but it’s what happens in this competition, you get a tackle wrong and the referees are quick to get the cards out.

“They obviously saw something in there, but I just think it’s tough, it’s a tough call that had a big influence on the game.”
