Covid-19 cases up by 11

YORKSHIRE’S CASES OF CORONAVIRUS INCREASE BY 15 IN LESS THAN A WEEK

- By DANIELLE HOE

THERE have been eleven more confirmed cases of coronavirus in Yorkshire with two of those in Calderdale.

North Yorkshire now has four confirmed cases, while both Leeds and Sheffield have another two cases each. Another case in Calderdale was confirmed late on Wednesday night, just hours after the area’s first case was announced.

Several other cases have already been confirmed across Yorkshire including Rotherham, Barnsley, Bradford, Kirklees, York and Hull, over the past few days.

Yorkshire and the North East have a total of 44 positive results.

Dr Andrew Furber, Centre Director for Public Health England Yorkshire and Humber, said: “Public Health England is contacting people who had close contact with the latest confirmed case of COVID-19.

“Close contacts will be given health advice about symptoms and emergency contact details to use if they become unwell in the 14 days after contact with the confirmed case.

“This tried and tested method will ensure we are able to minimise any risk to them and the wider public.”

Cases in Yorkshire have jumped up by 15 in under a week.

On Saturday, March 7, there were just two cases in Barnsley, one in Bradford and three in Leeds and York.

Now there are seven in Leeds, four in North Yorkshire, three in Sheffield, two in Barnsley and Calderdale, and one in Rotherham, Bradford, Kirklees and Hull.

People are advised to follow national government guidance to prevent further spread of the illness and limit the numbers affected.

This guidance includes taking basic hygiene precautions as the best way of significantly reducing the chances of spreading any virus: sneeze or cough into a tissue, bin it, wash your hands frequently and don’t touch your face unless you’ve just washed your hands.

Current evidence indicates that most cases appear to be mild, with patients experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Older residents or those with weakened immune systems or longterm conditions may experience more severe symptoms.
