Funeral services to cease

-

FUNERAL services and cremations in Kirklees will cease from Monday as coronavirus rules get stricter.

Social distancing rules has prompted Kirklees Council to take the “sad decision” to introduce direct cremations with no mourners and no service at its crematoriums in Huddersfield and Dewsbury.

The authority, which made the changes “with a heavy heart”, is working with funeral directors to explore ways in which memorials can take place in the future.

Services that have already been arranged will go ahead as planned, but the number of people in the chapel will be limited to 10 to ensure safe social distancing is observed.

The move follows government advice over the Covid-19 crisis.

The elderly, anyone with underlying health conditions or pregnant women are particularly encouraged to pay attention to current government guidance and to consider not attending a chapel service and instead stay at home.

Whilst families will be unable to enter the two crematoria or participate in a full funeral service the council says it hopes that providing the opportunity for a vicar or celebrant to say a prayer or a few words in the chapel will bring some comfort to families and loved ones.

Graveside burial services can still be booked and will continue to go ahead, but also with a reduced maximum of 10 mourners.

The changes will be reviewed regularly as the pandemic develops.

The council is investigating how families can properly celebrate a loved one’s life – perhaps by holding a service later in the year.

Anyone with questions about the process is advised to speak to their funeral director, who will be able to support them with arrangements.
