SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR:

-

Kaine Taylor became a wrestling champion just months after serious illness had left him fighting for life.

He made his wrestling debut aged just 13 at Huddersfield Town Hall and has gone on to become a favourite among wrestling fans nationwide.

But the 16-year-old 6ft 7ins giant from Meltham was struck down with pneumonia, sepsis and swine flu in April 2019 which left him fighting for life at Calderdale Royal Hospital.

He was in hospital for a month yet showed his true battling spirit to not only survive but then quickly return to training and was back wrestling within 10 weeks of being discharged from hospital.

Kaine’s first bout was on home turf in Holmfirth and it was so successful it earned him a crack at the UK Wrestling TV championship which he won when he was still just 15.

Kaine, who has just left Honley High School, has since made four successful defences and will be looking at competing in Europe in 2020. Many of the shows he competes in are charity fundraisers where the wrestlers take part for free.

Kaine was nominated by his father, Aaron Taylor, who said: “Kaine has wanted to be a wrestler ever since he saw his first bout at Huddersfield Town Hall when he was four – and then had his first bout at the same venue just nine years later. He has continued to progress and entertain people of all ages, helping to raise money for charities along the way.”

Kaine trains hard under the watchful eye of former ITV World of Sport champion Marty Jones and helps train even younger wrestlers taking up the sport.
