Streetbikes collects donated bikes, ensures they are roadworthy and donates them to people who otherwise would struggle to afford one, including single people, families, disabled people and the elderly. They also run mixed ability cycling sessions for all ages and abilities at Spenborough Track twice a week, and provide community rides and bike maintenance courses in deprived areas.
It also organises family cycling adventures, women-only rides and bike mechanic training.
Streetbikes has received two rounds of Lottery Funding and is estimated to have brought more than £1m into the local economy since it started.
Gill, of Brockholes, is married to Dave who helped her to set up Streetbikes, and they have three children, two stepchildren and six grandchildren.
She said: “I started Streetbikes as I’m passionate in giving everyone whatever their ability, race, age or gender equal opportunities in life. The first lady I lent a bike to fosters adults with learning disabilities and all three of her foster sons have volunteered at the track at the mixed ability sessions. I am so proud to have made such an impression on people to see them happier.”
ONE17 Architects & Interior Designers are delighted once again to sponsor the Services to Charity Award.
Since the launch of the ONE17 Charitable Trust in 2010 we have certainly had our eyes opened to things that are happening in our local community. We have met some amazing people who help to make Huddersfield a better place to live and it has been a pleasure and a privilege to support their work.
Whether it’s organising uplifting community events, supporting others in need or encouraging young people, every contribution improves the lives of people in our town.
Over the years we have seen a number of the groups that we support win Huddersfield Examiner Community Awards and have witnessed first-hand just what a massive boost this gives to those involved. It therefore gives us great pleasure to sponsor this award and ensure that the celebration of all that is great in Kirklees continues.
