Terriers’ fight against drop ‘will go to wire’

spun and got a feeble shot away, and Lewis O’Brien’s attempted interception diverted the ball into the net.

Town brought on Alex Pritchard almost straight after conceding the second and he shot wide, as did Grant shortly afterwards, with the home side seeking a route back.

They were seeing plenty of the ball and Cowley also introduced Elias Kachunga, Jon Stankovic, Andy King and Demeaco Duhaney before the final quarter of an hour in an attempt to shake things up.

But after Town had used their full quota of substitutions, Bacuna suffered a knock and hobbled around for the last few minutes, where Toffolo forced a routine stop from Marshall to preserve his clean sheet.

Substitutes Lee Evans and Joe Garner brought a double save out of Lossl.

Fraizer Campbell and Steve Mounie both missed the match through injury but Cowley says he is hopefully they will be available at Nottingham Forest next Sunday.

DANNY Cowley says Huddersfield Town may have to deal with the relegation battle going right to the wire.

The Terriers dropped two places to 20th in the Championship table on the back of the miserable 2-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic at a deserted John Smith’s Stadium.

Cowley’s side are now only a point above the drop zone and under increasing pressure ahead of away trips to Nottingham Forest next Sunday and Birmingham City the following Wednesday.

So how worried is Cowley after the bitterly disappointing display against Wigan, when goals from Jamal Lowe and Anthony Pilkington extended the visitors unbeaten run to seven matches?

“I’ve been concerned since

September the 9th when I joined this club,” said Cowley, who is hoping Fraizer Campbell and Steve Mounie will have recovered from injury to return against Forest in the Sky TV game.

“When you have only one point after eight games you know you are going to be in a relegation battle, and you know with eight games to go you are not going to get out of that relegation battle and you are going to be in and around it all season - it’s going to go to the wire.

“We have known that and nothing has changed in that respect, but we didn’t quite expect us still being in this position in June and further games to come in July, but that’s what ultimately is going to happen.

“So we need to go away, we need to look at this game and learn from this game.

“This is life in professional football. You have moments of disappointment, you have moments where you feel you’ve worked really, really hard and not got your rewards and you have two choices - you either sulk and feel sorry for yourself or you roll up your sleeves and stay focused and be determined and try and find a way of moving forward.”
