How Corberan’s move came about

- By JOHN MCDOUGALL @examinerHTAFC

CARLOS Corberan has been confirmed as the new Huddersfield Town boss.

The Spaniard has left Yorkshire rivals Leeds United where he worked with the club’s Under 23s set-up and in the first team under Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa and is now in the dugout at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Corberan replaces the sacked Danny Cowley.

Town have moved quickly to appoint a successor as they prepare for life in the Championship next season after securing their status as a second tier club thanks to victory over West Bromwich Albion.

Our understanding is that Town have been speaking to Corberan for some time – around a month or so – and were therefore in a position to move quickly after announcing Cowley’s dismissal on Sunday afternoon.

But how has this situation developed? Here’s a timeline of how events are understood to have unfolded which have led to Corberan becoming the new Town manager...

TOWN’S Championship survival was essentially confirmed with victory at West Brom at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The Terriers beat the Baggies 2-1 thanks to goals from Chris Willock and Emile Smith-Rowe, though Dara O’Shea had drawn West Brom level before the break.

Coupled with results the following day in the Championship, Town’s second tier status had been largely secured, sitting three points above the drop zone and a vastly superior goal difference to Luton Town, who occupied 22nd in the table.

Only a freak set of results on the final day of the season would see the Terriers playing League One football in the 2020/21 campaign, and they were never in danger of happening.

HUDDERSFIELD confirmed at 1.45pm that Danny Cowley had been relieved of his duties as Town boss, as well as his assistant Nicky Cowley.

In a statement, Town chairman Phil

Hodgkinson thanked both men for securing Town’s Championship status.

But Hodgkinson added: “However, we have made this decision in the belief that, in the long term, it is in the best interests of the club as we move forward.

“We have a different vision for the way we operate the club, and how our ambitions can be achieved.”

CORBERAN’S name first emerged as being linked with Town on Sunday within hours of Cowley being dismissed.

But by Monday morning, it is understood that it was clear those rumours were indeed correct and his name was in the frame and was even the preferred candidate for the job.

It is understood that Corberan spent Monday talking to the Elland Road club to discuss his potential departure and therefore pave the way for a move to the John Smith’s Stadium.

ON Tuesday morning, reports emerged suggesting that a compensation package had been agreed between Leeds and Huddersfield so Corberan could depart the Whites and become the new Town boss.

A move was then therefore imminent.

CORBERAN was at Elland Road to watch Leeds United received the Championship title trophy after a 4-0 win over Charlton Athletic.

He was part of the celebrations as manager Marcelo Bielsa, his staff and players were greeted by crowds outside the stadium.

While Leeds were rounding off the season in style, Town lost 4-1 to eighth-placed Millwall at The Den, where Danny Schofield took caretaker charge of the team, assisted by Jon Worthington, Paul Clements and Tommy Elphick.

TOWN announce the appointment Corberan as new head coach.
