Terriers have ‘unearthed a gem’ in Carlos

-

role as first-team coach.

He writes: “Is there a greater compliment to pay Carlos Corberan [than to] point out he has been by Bielsa’s side for two years, from a standing start?

“Corberan was one of Victor Orta’s earliest hires after becoming director of football at Elland Road. Brought in from Cyprus’s top division, nobody had heard of him.

“The Spaniard was at the heart of the vanguard invited by Andrea Radrizzani to breathe new life into an academy set-up which had been cut to the bone by Massimo Cellino.”

He adds: “Corberan was mentioned in the earliest conversations

Bielsa had with Orta, Angus Kinnear and Radrizzani in the summer of 2018.

“He was kept on by the Argentine and the fact he remained in his staff, not only with the under-23s, but on the touchline in the heat of the Championship battle speaks volumes for his impact and importance.”

The piece then goes on to list the players who made their way to the Leeds first-team squad after coming through Corberan’s youth system.

It’s an impressive list: “Mateusz Bogusz, Jack Clarke, Leif Davis, Robbie Gotts, Aapo Halme, Will Huffer, Clarke Oduor, Jamie Shackleton, Jordan Stevens, Pascal Struijk, Kun Temenuzhkov, Oliver Casey and Alfie McCalmont.

“Bielsa gave them all senior debuts after varying lengths of time with Corberan and the under-23s. Corberan would never claim to have moulded those talents on his own, but he has played a part in that transition.

“Corberan is not Bielsa, nobody is, but he had the tactical acumen to carry out a formation and approach for the under-23s which mirrored the first team.”

Meanwhile, Town prospect Scott High has joined League One side Shrewsbury Town on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old made his senior debut for the Terriers on the final day of the 2019/20 season, coming on for Andy King late on in the 4-1 defeat to Millwall at the Den.

The former academy player of the year is very highly thought-of at Town and it is hoped that a loan spell in the tier below will do for him what it had previously done for the newlycrowned player of the year Lewis O’Brien, who played in the third tier for Bradford City in 2018/19.

High will already be familiar with two faces at New Meadow. He will be joined at the club by Rekeil Pyke, who has also been unveiled as a permanent Shrewsbury signing following his release from the Terriers last month.
