Rates falling in Calderdale

- By JOHN GREENWOOD and SAMANTHA GILDEA

CALDERDALE remains in the top ten upper-tier local authority areas which are experiencing and trying to combat a rise in Covid-19.

But figures published by NHS Digital show the rate has fallen compared to the previous seven-day rolling period, with case numbers down by a third.

The rolling weekly figures show a decrease of 33% in the number of cases in Calderdale between August 9 and August 15, giving the authority a figure of 33.3 people per 100,000 having the virus with 70 new infections reported.

The rate per 100,000 compares to a figure of 44.3 people per 100,000 in the previous seven-day

August 2 to 8.

Triages - calls to various NHS lines from people who think they may have symptoms of Covid-19 - were down 22%, with 141 calls made.

Of upper-tier authorities, Calderdale is eighth-worst affected at the moment, with Blackburn with Darwen, Oldham, Bradford, Northampton, Leicester, Manchester, Rochdale and Salford experiencing higher rates.

Although the figures are lower than the previous week, they are still high and efforts to contain them continue.

Calderdale Council was set to host a question and answer session about what is being done and what people can do to help ease the pandemic situation, on the council’s YouTube channel.

Answering questions will be

period, the council’s Director of Public Health, Debs Harkins, the Chief Executive of Halifax Opportunities Trust, Alison Haskins, West Yorkshire Police Superintendent, Sarah Baker, and the council’s senior environmental health officer, Amy McGarry.

Wednesday is also the date for the first formal review of local restrictions introduced in parts of West Yorkshire, Lancashire and Greater Manchester because of rises in the number of cases, although these have been informally reviewed at the end of each week since they were imposed on July 31.

Among measures being taken, this week has seen the official launch of the test and trace partnership between the national scheme and Calderdale’s scheme, which will target areas of most concern.
