Ward aims to repeat his special Town trick!

qualities to the team. Goals, of course, are what people always look for first, but holding the ball up, winning the ball in the air and making the unselfish runs which allow other players to shine – they are all valuable commodities too.

Ward has developed all aspects of his game since he was last at the John Smith’s Stadium, and he now knows how to lead an attack – and in the 4-3-3 formation which Corberan will play.

Astonishingly, there is one Town record Ward still holds from his years with the club (2011-2015).

Fans have often moaned in recent years about the team’s lack of goals.

Even under David Wagner, Town struggled to deliver big victories and, amazingly, they managed to win promotion to the Premier League despite having a minus goal difference (-2) - and also despite having a natural goalscorer in Nahki Wells.

It was a particular struggle in the second Premier League season, obviously, and carried through to the last campaign, although Karlan Grant’s 19 goals as leading scorer were a fine achievement.

As an illustration of the club’s problems in front of goal over an extended period of time, it’s worth pointing out Danny Ward is the last player to score a league hat-trick for Town.

It came six years ago in the Championship and he netted three times in the 4-1 win at

Watford which closed the 2013-14 campaign.

The Town manager at the time was Mark Robins, who will bring his promoted Coventry side to the John Smith’s this season, and he watched Ward go on as a 30th-minute replacement for Wells and steal the show.

Joe Lolley, making his full debut, opened the scoring for the visitors by shooting home just after half-time. Ward’s low drive doubled the Terriers’ advantage, and he finished instinctively to make it 3-0.

His hat-trick came from a curling free-kick before Troy Deeney netted a late consolation from the penalty spot.
