Road closed off after residents raised fears over safety
A STRETCH of road had to be partially closed off in a Calderdale village after concerns were raised about some excavation work being carried out on adjacent land.
Council officers are working with the developer to deal with any issues after residents raised their concerns with a local councillor about the stability of a fenced-off area of Saddleworth Road, Greetland, last week.
For a time part of the road, between Green Lane and Garrick Terrace, was closed while an inspection was carried out.
Ward councillor Coun Paul Bellenger (Lib Dem, Greetland and Stainland) said residents brought the issue to his attention because they were concerned about the amount of excavation work which had been carried out to the development site and that the integrity of the land above was possibly compromised.
“Having visited the site myself I felt it necessary to contact our highways team for an appropriate officer to undertake a site visit and implement appropriate action if needed.
“Public safety is paramount hence the precautionary measures to close the road.
“Our officers are working with the developers to ensure appropriate measures are taken to ensure the site is safe and the road can be reopened as soon as possible,” he said.
Calderdale Council’s Assistant Director for Strategic Infrastructure, Steven Lee, said the aim was to have the road operating normally again as soon as it was possible.
“We’ve identified some issues with excavations that have taken place on a development site adjacent to Saddleworth Road.
“Consequently, given the proximity of the road to the excavation, we’ve had to close a lane and have installed traffic management.
“We’re liaising with the developer to remediate and will have the road operating normally as soon as possible,” said Mr Lee.
