‘My family were racially abused at ice cream shop’

A POPULAR Yorkshire ice cream shop owner has been accused of calling an Asian family “monkeys”, before allegedly ordering them to leave the premises.

Mohammed Abubakar Qasim wrote in a post: “So we visited (sic) Charlotte’s ice cream parlour in Dewsbury today.

“My family are wearing a face mask but I’m medically exempt from wearing one so I show the owner my pass.

“The owner of the shop tells us to leave and when asked why, he calls us ‘monkeys.’ Bear in mind other customers were not wearing masks for whatever or no reason.

“He then starts shouting ‘Get out of my shop’ and our kids start crying.”

West Yorkshire Police confirmed they are investigat­ing the allegation­s of racial abuse and Mohammed added in his post that the shop owner’s staff were allegedly “shocked at his racial behaviour”, and claimed that one employee apologised to the family.

A spokesman said: “West Yorkshire Police is investigat­ing this matter to establish what offences have occurred and will be speaking to the complainan­t to obtain more informatio­n about what happened.

“Reports of this nature are taken seriously and will be investigat­ed thoroughly.”

Charlotte’s Ice Cream Parlour, which is located in the small village of Whitley, is an ice cream parlour with an onsite farm animals, a giant slide and tractor buggy rides for small children.

The Examiner has approached the owner of the parlour for a statement in relation to the allegation­s that have been made.
