HUDDERSFIELD Town Women continued their perfect record in pre-season with a 5-0 win over Newcastle United Women at the Stafflex Arena.

A brace apiece from Sarah Danby and Lucy Sowerby saw the Terriers emerge comfortable victors from a rather one-sided game.

Sowerby - last season’s top scorer - was thrilled to notch a brace, saying: “It was great to get another big win against tough opposition.

“Getting on the scoresheet again was nice too, so I want to keep this momentum building into the first game of the league season against Fylde.”

Town took the lead with just a few minutes on the clock.

Kate Mallin beat her marker well and, after her initial cross was blocked, the second delivery found Danby unmarked at the back post and the ex-Sunderland player nodded home.

And Mallin was at it again, taking her marker to the byline before sending in a teasing cross which was met strongly by Sowerby, whose header doubled the lead.

The third came courtesy of Sowerby again who rifled the ball into the top right corner to give her side a three-goal lead at the break.

Danby placed home a wonderful volley from another Mallin cross before Laura Elford got in on the act.

Manager Jordan Wimpenny took charge of the game on his birthday and the heavy win was the perfect present.

“It was another top performance from the players. Their commitment and application keeps on improving and that can only be a good thing,” he said.

“We kept another clean sheet - that’s four in five games now so that’s an area that we keep on improving week in, week out.

“We’re full of confidence and scoring lots of goals, so if we keep on working hard in training we’ll be ready for the season to start against Fylde on the 20th.”
