TRAVELLERS who set up an illegal encampment near a retail park in Huddersfield are set to face court action.

Kirklees Council is “working through the legal process” to remove the group, which has been parked on Tandem Way, close to the Gallagher Retail Park at Waterloo, since early December.

Prior to settling on Tandem Way, the access onto Tandem Industrial Estate, the travellers had camped on a car park next to the former Soccer City site.

Following a request to move the travellers, a spokesman for Kirklees Council said: “We are aware of the traveller site at Tandem Way.

“We have carried out a welfare visit and are now working through the legal process to clear the site. A court date is set for this tomorrow.”

The authority faced criticism over the summer for its “plodding” response to calls to remove a large traveller group camped on playing fields at Grange Moor.

The 20-strong group eventually quit the site - leaving behind a scrap caravan - after the council applied to the County Court for a possession order to evict them. In the meantime they had been provided with additional temporary water, sanitation and waste disposal facilities as directed by the Government.

The council has previously said it would not use bailiffs to remove traveller groups and that it will continue to apply to the County Court for possession orders.

We have carried out a welfare visit and are now working through the legal process to clear

the site.
