A WOMAN was rushed to hospital last night following reports of an incident ‘related to the use of chemicals’ at flats in Huddersfield.

One eye-witness claimed as many as 70 students had been evacuated from the student accommodation on Firth Street.

West Yorkshire Police were called to the scene at 5.16pm yesterday and they remained there late into the night along with the fire and rescue service.

Residents had to be evacuated from the building and the road was closed as emergency services managed the incident.

The operation was focused on the student accommodation which is next door to the fast-food restaurant Pino’s.

A relative of a student living in Block A says they have been evacuated and are not allowed back into the accommodation until Friday.

They said: “My niece lives on Block A. They were evacuated and she’s in her pyjama, slippers and phone. They are not allowed to go to accommodation till Friday.

“She’s angry and upset.” A spokesperson for the force said: “At 5.16pm today (Tuesday), police received a report of a concern for safety at a block of flats in Firth Street, Huddersfield.

“Emergency services attended after enquiries suggested the incident could be related to the use of chemicals.

“Residents were evacuated and road closures were put in place to allow for the incident to be managed safely.

“Entry was gained to a flat and a woman was taken to hospital for further treatment.

“Enquiries are continuing at the scene, but the incident is not believed to be suspicious.”
