A CHARITY is seeking a new board member following the death of a long-standing supporter.

David Wright, a much respected ex-Labour councillor and former Mayor of Kirklees, died earlier this month. He was 84.

As well as being a councillor for Deighton for many years Mr Wright was a long-serving magistrate and worked as the agent for Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman.

He and his wife, Phyllis, were Mayor and Mayoress of Kirklees in 1992-93.

His death leaves gaps in the lives of many people and community organisations, including on the board of Deighton-based charity the RJ Whitehead Almshouses, for which he was a trustee.

Now his close friend and colleague, Dr Bill Armer, is seeking help to run the charity.

Dr Armer, who is also a Conservative councillor for the Kirkburton ward, paid a heartfelt tribute to Mr Wright.

He said: “I am deeply saddened by

David’s death. who put service to the community at the top of his to-do list and a remarkable servant of the community.

“I worked closely with David as a trustee for 10 years and we developed a close working partnership. I am proud to describe him as a friend.”

Dr Armer would like to hear from anyone who is interested in helping to manage the charity. Although it is an unpaid position, it is an important contribution to the community.

He said: “Once Covid restrictions are lifted, there is a modest time requirement of one meeting a month of about an hour’s duration and a half-day once a year to meet the Almshouse residents.”

Anyone who is interested in helping the charity, or who wants more details, is encouraged to contact Bill Armer by email on bill@gmx.ca
