THREE binmen didn’t stop to think twice when they saw a man collapsed in the road.

Mick McDermott, Chris Armand and Andy Borowy were on their Fartown round when they spotted what looked like a man’s body and rushed to help.

Mick, 50, who has been on the bins for over 20 years, said: “We were in the wagon and had just swung into Dewhirst Road and Chris said: ‘I’m sure there’s a body in the road.’

“My eyesight is not too good but we all jumped out and immediately we could see that a man in his late 50s/60s was struggling for breath. He had had a heart attack.

“I turned him onto his side and made sure his airwaves were clear while Chris began dialling 999 for an ambulance. We thought we were too late and he had gone, there was nothing left of him.

“Then we turned him onto his back and I began CPR.

“I had never done it before but Kirklees Council had got us a First Aid booklet and I’d watched bits and pieces on the TV and read stuff about it in books, so I rolled my sleeves up and gave it a go.

“It was a great moment when we got some breath into him and he came back to life. Then the paramedics arrived and Andy helped set up the defibrillator while the police cordoned off the road as they didn’t know what had happened.”

Mick added: “About three weeks later we received a message from the man’s sister saying she would like to thank us for saving his life. He was called Christopher Lennon.

“Unfortunately there was a mix-up over where she lived so we haven’t been able to get in touch.

“But it was really nice of her that she wanted to say thank you to us in person – we don’t get many compliments as a rule – it’s just such a shame that we have been given the wrong road!”
