Changes to parking on town centre streets

OTHERS CLOSED TO TRAFFIC AS EIGHT STREETS ALTERED IN COUNCIL BID TO MAKE TRAVEL EASIER

- By TONY EARNSHAW Local Democracy Reporter @LdrTony

SHOPPERS and visitors to Huddersfield will see a series of changes to town centre streets from the end of March.

Eight streets will be altered with changes affecting parking, loading and, in some cases, closure to traffic.

The changes by Kirklees Council will involve the loss of some existing on-street pay and display parking bays. The number of disabled parking bays available is being increased.

The council will carry out the work before beginning a period of public consultation.

The authority says it will review the measures during the first six months and that members of the public can make comments on the changes during that time.

The changes are meant to make it easier for people to choose how they travel into Huddersfield town centre, whether that is by public transport, in a car, on foot or by bike.

They also aim to make it easier for people to keep to social distancing guidelines.

The council’s strategic director for growth and regeneration,

David Shepherd, said changes to the way people shop and socialise in response to the coronavirus pandemic had given the council “an opportunity to try new things and attract different customers”.
