FIVE YORKSHIRE VENUES NAMED AMONG UK’S TOP 50 GASTROPUBS

FOOD and hospitality experts have ranked five Yorkshire pubs - including one in Halifax - among the 50 best gastropubs in the UK.

And the Michelin starred Star Inn at Harome, near Helmsley, can add another gong to its substantial collection after it was voted runner-up in the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs 2021.

Other Michelin starred gastropubs to make the list were The Angel, at Hetton, near Skipton; and the Pipe and Glass, at South Dalton, near Beverley, which ranked 12th and 21st respectively.

Also making the top 50 were The Moorcock, near Sowerby Bridge; and the Shibden Mill Inn, near Halifax.

The overall winner was The Sportsman in Seasalter, Kent.

Here’s what the guide says about each one. they’ll describe something like the Star Inn at Harome...

“The Star’s name has become synonymous across the country with a dedication to fine produce and playful but refined cooking.

“Take [Andrew] Pern’s best-known dish, which he describes as the epitome of his ‘rich man, poor man’ style: pan-fried foie gras teamed with rich black pudding, doused in a sticky scrumpy cider reduction.

“Further menu highlights include Rievaulx shot partridge with junipercreamed Brussel sprouts, pine-smoked Alsace bacon, smoked beets and clementine with Port wine juices; and baked sherried fig frangipane with toasted marzipan, nibbled almost brittle, candied clementine and figgy toffee ice cream.

“No foams or airs (neither edible nor the put-on kind) will emerge from the Star’s kitchen. Only the best Yorkshire produce, cooked to perfection.”

“To some, the Angel at Hetton in North Yorkshire is the UK’s very first gastropub, but that’s not a debate we’re willing to get into right now.

“Another area we’re not willing to debate is the greatness of the food served at this charming and cosy foodie pub...

“On the bar, you could find the likes of pumpkin soup with teriyaki, hen of the woods, toasted pumpkin seeds and pumpkin oil.”

While if you go a la carte you can have, “Cumbrian loin lamb, which comes with turnip, barbecued kale, chestnut, roast onion and winter truffle” and “turbot, which is served with salsify, sea leek and smoked pike roe butter, scented with kombu vinegar”.

“James and Kate Mackenzie’s Yorkshire pub the Pipe and Glass Inn may have a Michelin star, but don’t expect skimpy portions.

“As you’d expect from a northern pub, chef James’s fare at the Pipe & Glass is hearty and moreish: think locally shot game, freshly caught seafood and Barnsley chops the size of small children.

“Nestled in photogenic Shibden Valley, 17th-century West Yorkshire pub the Shibden Mill Inn in Fold, Halifax, made its Top 50 Gastropub bow on the 2020 list...

“On the a la carte menu, you can expect to find dishes such as puffed cod skins with horseradish and creme fraiche; baked cheddar with ale bread and Marmite butter; and Shibden Ale sausage roll with caramelised apple ketchup to nibble on.

“Starters have included barbecue turnip with white bean, apple and savoy; Yorkshire game pressing with pickled walnut puree, candied walnuts and turnip cream; and cured monkfish with pumpkin, dukkah spice and strawberry vinegar.”
