Pearson: Danny deal suits us all

- By STEVEN CHICKEN

NIGEL Pearson revealed why he has handed Danny Simpson a short-term contract.

The former Huddersfield Town right-back was on trial at Sheffield Wednesday earlier this month, having been a free agent since leaving the Terriers at the end of last season.

The 34-year-old, a Premier League title winner with Leicester City, played an under-23s game for the Owls and there was talk manager Darren Moore was ready to hand him a deal.

But Moore opted against it, addressing the matter briefly when he said: “Danny came up on the radar, but after looking into it, he just wasn’t for us.”

It didn’t take long for Simpson to find a new club though, and he is now reunited with ex-Leicester boss Pearson at Bristol City.

Pearson had two stints in charge at the King Power Stadium, the second of which saw him sign Simpson in 2014.

When asked if Wednesday’s interest prompted him to hand Simpson a contract, Pearson replied: “Not at all. When I spoke to Danny about it, he told me that Wednesday had shown interest.

“You make your own decisions on what you feel is best for yourself for a career move. I invited him down to train and he really enjoyed training. It’s a chance for us to have a look at him and for him to have a look at us too. There are benefits of being able to secure short-term agreements because it is an observational opportunity for both parties.”

TERRIERS academy boss Emyr Humphreys has pulled back the curtain on the club’s academy recruitment processes.

Humphreys was previously the Huddersfield Town academy
