The Conservati­ves’ Bernard McGuin has the lowest majority - just 60 - of any sitting councillor in the 2021 elections. He faces five challenger­s this year with the Lib Dems’ Patrycja Bartosinka hoping to bag the seat to make Almondbury an all Lib Dem stronghold.

Standing down this year are Lib Dem veteran and former Mayor of Kirklees Christine Iredale along with ex-Labour man Richard Murgatroyd who, like Rob Walker, quit the party over the direction of travel under the leadership of Sir Keir Starmer.

Standing for Labour in Kirkburton is Imran Safdar, formerly a Tory candidate for Crosland Moor and Netherton ward and who campaigned for Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney.

Mr Safdar later left the Conservati­ve Party criticisin­g its austerity plan and its problems with Islamaphob­ia. He will be hoping to topple Tory Richard Smith, who in 2016 was elected with a majority of 136 votes. Waheed Anwar (Lib Dems)
