THAT’S A BIT STEEP!

- By DAVE HIMELFIELD david.himelfield@reachplc.com @Dave_Examiner

WE at The Examiner rattle on a lot about places ideal for a gentle stroll.

Well, what if you don’t want a bimble? What if you’re a seasoned hiker who wants a proper challenging walk?

Here is a selection of Yorkshire’s toughest walks, and by ‘toughest’ we mean the most physically challenging, not rambles where you’ll be at the greatest risk of crime.

Hardcore as these hikes may be, the scenery is still beautiful; breathtaking, dare we say. We wouldn’t dream of sending you traipsing through the dreariest scenery God’s Own Country has to offer.

So tough but pretty it is and relatively short. Yes, walking all the way from Land’s End to John O’ Groats is challenging but it takes ages. These are walks you can do in a day – or two days if you get tired. ridge to a memorial which commemorates the death of five Polish airmen whose bomber crashed into the hill during a snowstorm in 1942.

This walk at the top of the Calder Valley isn’t long – it’s barely three miles – but boy is it steep. You’ll ascend 300m in this short ramble up the Pennine Way to Stoodley Pike, a folly high above Todmorden which itself has a viewing platform.

The route is simple; start at Callis Community Gardens by the Rochdale Canal and follow the Pennine Way uphill.

This 10-mile hike packs in several peaks on the south Dales, including Embsay Crag, Hall Fell and Rylstone Fell. The views and features, including a war memorial, a large cross and a reservoir, make 600m of ascent worthwhile.

This was Captain James Cook’s stomping ground so it’s fitting to start from the James Cook Schoolroom Museum in Great Ayton.

The four-mile walk takes you from the pretty village, through the leafy foothills and along a heather lined ridge to Roseberry Topping itself.

There’s about 300m of ascent to (arguably) the most spectacular view in Yorkshire.

There are few better ways to see the beautiful Holme Valley in a day than on this 24-mile ramble.

Beginning at Berry Brow railway station, the 11-hour walk takes in the small quaint town of Holmfirth plus the villages of Holmbridge, Hepworth, Thurstonland and of course, Castle Hill.

It’s not just the length of the walk that’s challenging. There’s a lot of ascending and descending but the views, the reservoirs and the pubs en route make it worthwhile.

This nine-mile circular walk follows the exposed ridge that separates Littondale and Wharfedale. It takes you through craggy moorlands and down into hay meadows.

This 40-mile trek across the North York Moors is best done over two days but some hardcore hikers do it in a single day.

Starting from Osmotherley, this hike (and a half) takes you all the way to the coast at Ravenscar, via The Lion Inn pub at High Blakey and Fylingdales radar base.

You’ll face steep ascents and boggy ground but there will be knockout views if the clouds keep away.

This 12-mile leg-buster takes you from the pretty market town of Skipton, through the south Yorkshire Dales and into the quintessential Dales village of Malham.

The long climb to Sharp Haw at the beginning sets the tone for this undulating trek characterised by moor climbs, breathtaking views and one of the Dales’ greatest hidden treasures, Gordale Scar.
