HUDDERSFIELD public transport users are being invited to give their views on plans to transform the town’s bus station.

Transport bosses have tired of its ‘underwhelming’ appearance and if plans for the 1970s station - one of the busiest in the county - are passed by Kirklees Council it should be open in its new form over the next few years.

The plans are part of a £32 million package of transport improvements in the town, which are being undertaken in partnership by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Kirklees Council.

Bus station changes include better passenger facilities and access, and new cycle storage.

Environmentally friendly measures, such as solar panels to help make the bus station more energy efficient, are also being considered.

Two online events, which are being held as part of the public consultation on the plans, will take place tomorrow, from 6pm-7pm, and on Friday, from 1pm-2pm.

Each session will include a presentation about the plans, followed by an opportunity to ask the project team questions.

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, said: “In my manifesto, I committed to improving public transport, connecting more people with opportunities and helping tackle the climate emergency on our way to becoming a net zero carbon economy by 2038.

“That is why I am delighted people are being given the opportunity to shape these plans to transform Huddersfield Bus Station.”

Councillor Peter McBride, Cabinet Member for Regeneration at Kirklees Council, said: “I am pleased to see that the people of Kirklees have yet another opportunity to shape the future of our town centres. The transformation of Huddersfield bus station is a vital step to improving connectivity in the town and complements our ambitious Blueprint plans. I encourage people to take a look at the plans and have their say on this exciting development.”

The plans are part of a wider package to make it easier for people to travel in and around Huddersfield by bus, train, bike and on foot.

The consultation is open until Sunday 12 September.

I am delighted people are being given the opportunity to shape

these plans.
