TRIBUTES have been paid to a lifelong Huddersfield Town fan and family man who has died suddenly at the age of 54.

Father-of-three Wayne Thornton, of Sheepridge in Huddersfield, was a ‘caring, happy and good-hearted’ man, his daughter Jade Foster said.

Family members have been left shocked by his sudden death on Sunday.

Jade said her dad was a ‘true legend’ who was well known to many people ‘as a top bloke that would do anything to help anyone.’

“He would always have a smile on his face and was so polite and welcoming.

“He always had time to stop for a chat or make sure everyone else was okay before himself,” she said.

Mr Thornton was a passionate Huddersfield Town fan and had attended home games for around 30 years, she said.

He was also a family man who was devoted to his three grandchildren, Ella, Koby and Myah.

“His grandchildren were his absolute world. He’d spend hours doing jigsaws, building car tracks or playing ball games in the garden.

“They are absolutely distraught, he adored all three of them.

“With them being so young they now know grandad is in the sky and to look for the biggest shining star because that will be grandad always looking down on them.”

Jade has now set up a Go Fund Me page to raise money to pay for her dad’s funeral. More than £1,900 has been raised so far, with donations from 40

people.

Jade is hoping that loved ones will wear Huddersfield Town shirts at his funeral.

“He collected every single Huddersfield Town shirt over the years.

“His family have decided to give a shirt each to all his close loved ones to honour his life when saying our final goodbyes, to create a sea of blue and

Mr Thornton, who worked at Montgomery Engravers in Fartown, Huddersfield, and grew up in Golcar, leaves his partner, Lynn, and three daughters, Jade, Sianne, and Kayleigh-Marie.

A funeral date has yet to be fixed, his family said.
