FORMER RESIDENT’S SHOCK AT LOW NUMBER OF HOLMFIRTH RESIDENTS IN FACE COVERINGS

- By ANDREW ROBINSON

A FORMER Holmfirth resident was shocked and saddened to see ‘so few people wearing masks’ during a recent visit.

Ros Walker, now living in Scotland, says her recent visit to the Holme Valley town was spoiled by what she sees as people not taking responsibility for the health of others.

She was visiting Holmfirth to see friends but was unable to see them as they are isolating due to having coronavirus.

Ros told The Examiner that many people in Scotland were still complying and wearing masks.

“Levels of compliance are still very high in Scotland,” she said.

“It’s been a shock to see this down here and heartbreaking not to be able to see the friends we came to see.”

In a post on Facebook, she said: “Back in Holmfirth for a visit. It is the most beautiful place and you are so lucky to live here.

“There is one thing spoiling our visit and that is that so few people are wearing masks.

“Just because the government says you don’t have to doesn’t mean that there isn’t a personal responsibility to do so. It’s still the law to wear them in Scotland.

“What is sad is that you don’t wear a mask to protect yourself, you wear it to protect others.

“My guess is that those wearing them are those who feel vulnerable and it makes me sad.

“The rates here are sky high – we can’t see two families we were desperate to see after two years because they are isolating with Covid.

“If people made their own decisions and wore the masks, it would slow the rate of transmission.

“Please, lovely people, just think about others. It’s a small thing to do for a big reward. Have a good day.”

Her comments come amid concern about skyrocketing infection rates in parts of the Holme Valley.
