Town should be proud of their Lions HILL’S DESIRE

WATSON SAYS NEW BOY DESPERATE TO BE THE BEST

- By ROSS HEPPENSTALL

ENGLAND prop Chris Hill still has a ‘desire to be the best’, according to Huddersfield Giants boss Ian Watson.

The Claret and Gold have signed the veteran prop forward from Warrington Wolves on a two-year deal.

The 33-year-old England international has made 295 appearances since joining the Wire from Leigh in 2012 and captained them from 2016 to 2019 but turned down the offer of a new contract.

The signing is a major coup for the ambitious Giants, who underperformed in Watson’s first season in charge despite a major influx of players.

As Watson bids to engineer a season of serious progress at the

John Smith’s Stadium in 2022, he is buoyed by the potential impact of hard-hitting Hill.

“What you learn as you go through your career is that there are certain players who have that desire burning within them, to be the best and to compete,” Watson said.

“Hilly has definitely one of those attitudes and you look at his performances last season - Chris Hill was probably still one of the best front-rowers in the competition.

“We looked at him in the game before we played Warrington in terms of how many metres he makes, so attack-wise he was really dangerous.

“But I know he has a great work ethic defensively and there were numerous times last year when you saw him scramble back and rescue a situation for Warrington. You don’t generally see that from many frontrowers, but if you want to be a winner then you have to do the right things.”

Hill, who has made over 30 appearances for England and Great Britain, twice won the Challenge Cup with Warrington, and made the Super League Dream Team on three occasions.

Watson added: “A lot of what Chris has achieved in rugby league all stems from hard work and I think that’s what he’s done throughout his career.

“He’s worked really hard to get where he has and I know for a fact that’s he’s definitely hungry to achieve things and enjoy more success here at Huddersfield Giants.”
