Stranger to rescue after shopper’s card declined at checkout

KIND-HEARTED CUSTOMER PAID FOR SUPERMARKET SHOP

- By LUCY MARSHALL

A HALIFAX man struggling with the rising cost of living has shared his gratitude after a ‘kind’ man paid for his shopping after his card was declined.

Jordan Baker went into Lidl, in Hayley Hill, to pick up some essentials. The resident, who has been struggling with his bills, got what he needed and headed over to the till to pay, but his card wasn’t accepted.

“My card declined and I couldn’t remember the pin on the other”, he said.

Jordan added that he has autism and in such situations he can become highly overwhelmed.

Thankfully a kind gesture from a stranger meant he could get his food shop.

Jordan said: “I got to Lidl in Halifax around 9pm and did my usual shopping. After scanning my shopping at the checkout, I’ve of course gone to pay. That’s when I tried my own card and I had insufficient funds.

“I also had my friend’s card with me, but I forgot the pin. I then went to call my partner to ask him for the pin again, but that’s when a nice gentleman behind offered to pay for the shopping for me. I did politely decline, but he was insistent.

“Of which I thanked him very much for his help – I’d like to extend my gratitude to the kind gentleman. I can’t say thank you enough for helping me out in such a stressful situation.”

Jordan said that he ‘rushed’ over to the nearest garage to withdraw some money from an ATM, but by the time he walked back into the supermarket the kind stranger had gone.

Jordan says he has been feeling the pressure of the rising costs of living following post-pandemic setbacks, and the impact of the Russian war on Ukraine.

He added: “The effects have been hard to be honest. I’ve sort of given up keeping up with the cost of energy now.

“We’re struggling but I’m very appreciative of kind people like that man helping people out.”
