CHAMPION’S PROMOTER NOW IN AMAAR’S CORNER

- By LUCY MARSHALL

BOXER Amaar Akbar wants to put Dewsbury on the map and is striving for world fame.

After being snapped up by legendary British boxing promoter Frank Warren, the 22-year-old is “focused on his goals” to surpass the likes of Tyson Fury.

Amaar, who went to Mirfield Free Grammar School, started boxing at age 14 and he “sparked from there”.

He was luckily able to train at his dad’s boxing club Warrior Breed in Bradford Road – the sport had been an “integral” part of the family tree for dec- ades.

“He was a prodigy as soon as he put those gloves on,” dad and manager Zahir Akbar said.

At age 18 he began making a name for himself in the amateur ranks, winning two national titles, two national finals, six Yorkshire titles and he also represented Great Britain.

Amaar has also been a consistent sparring partner with ex-British champion Tyrone Nurse from Huddersfield.

Juggling studying sport at Bradford College on top of endless hours in the ring, Amaar told his dad he wanted the sport to be his full-time career.

One of Amaar’s main goals was to represent Dewsbury at the top level of one of the nation’s most beloved sports.

Now, he has set his sights on conquering the US.

Speaking about his son, Zahir Akbar, said: “The unbeaten professional hopes to win a world title and make his local community proud. “Now represented by one of the hall of fame boxing promoters, he has good backing.

“He is one of the only lads in West Yorkshire to have Frank Warren behind him.

“He is just a young man chasing his dreams but now he wants world titles and to be on the big stage.”

The boxer’s drive not only comes from his passion for the sport but to represent both the Yorkshire and Asian communities on the big stage. He wants other kids just like him to get involved in boxing too.

Zahir added: “The kids who come down to the club love it when he comes in to see them.”

While being described as “the humblest guy you’ll meet” by his dad, the sporting star enjoys spending his free time in cities such as Dubai, driving a Lamborghini, and wearing tailored suits.

He is also a passionate philanthropist, currently supporting the Solar Water Panel Project run by Human Appeal – aiming to strengthen humanity’s fight against poverty, social injustice, and natural disasters.

Amaar said: “It’s with a belief I feel I can deal with anything. I learnt this after the death of my younger brother who sadly died due to a heart condition.

“Looking to the future I’d like to be a world champion. I have very strong faith and place everything on Allah SWT. As long as I train hard, winning and losing comes from the Almighty.”

The next challenge for the boxer will be fighting fir the WBO Interim World Super Middleweight title tomorrow.
