Terriers manager Corberan backs VAR for play-offs

- By STEVEN CHICKEN @examinerHTAFC

HUDDERSFIELD Town head coach Carlos Corberan would not be against the introduction of VAR for the Championship play-offs, per reports that the EFL are considering bringing it in should the clubs involved approve the idea.

VAR is currently only used in England for Premier League games and FA Cup ties at the homes of current top-flight sides.

The implementation of the video technology has not been universally popular, with critics feeling that absurdities are introduced by trying to apply the laws of the game in slow motion given they were not devised with VAR in mind.

However, the Telegraph report that the six clubs still in with a chance of claiming a play-off spot have been approached about the possibility of implementing VAR for the play-offs and that the responses have been ‘overwhelmingly positive’.

Town and Nottingham Forest are already guaranteed a place in the play-offs, with Sheffield United, Luton Town, Middlesbrough and Millwall set to compete for the final two places on the last day of the regular season today.

Asked whether he would be in favour of the proposal, Corberan said: “If it’s working well, yes. If not...if you ask me ‘do you like that the Championship doesn’t have VAR’, I think the level of the referees in England is a very good level of referees.

“Of course, mistakes are part of being a human being.

“Referees are going to make mistakes, coaches are going to make mistakes, players are going to make mistakes.

“Journalists sometimes, I don’t know, but maybe too in terms of predicted line-ups or whatever. Mistakes are part [of everything].

“I think that the game is very fair in England and the level for me of the referees, including the fourth officials and everything, is very high, so it means that for me I feel we are in good hands for any game.

“If they want to increase the possibilities even knowing that it is human beings but with technological support, it would be fine too. I don’t know.”

Corberan acknowledged that all he wants is the right decisions, adding: “That’s the key, but I think the level of the referees helps everyone to feel the game here in England is very fair and we are in good hands because for me they are doing a very good job.”
