Watto wants to keep hold of hero Leo

- By RODDY BROOKS

IAN Watson believes Leroy Cudjoe will be asking for a new contract after he starred in Huddersfield’s 38-10 over Hull KR which moved the Giants up to third in the Betfred Super League.

Cudjoe grabbed a hat-trick of tries in his side’s emphatic win and head coach Watson thinks the 34-year-old centre could be demanding new terms on the back of his display.

Giants made it six Super League wins in a row with a dominant second-half performance.

Watson joked about Cudjoe: “He will probably go in tomorrow and ask for a new deal.

“I don’t think Leroy’s a problem. We want to keep Leroy, we’ve told Leroy we want to keep him. There’s kind of no pressure from Leroy’s side or from our side.

“We just need to get it sorted out and get it done. Leroy will be playing with us next year.”

When Tui Lolohea kicked out on the full at the start of the match Watson feared the worst.

He said: “I kind of thought it was going to be one of them days.

“It picks Hull KR’s supporters up. They got the upper hand early doors and they played really well.

“Once our right edge had adjusted and sorted it out I thought we were really good after that.

“We forced the ball too early when we played against the wind, we needed to be more patient. As the half went on we got a little bit more patient.”

Jermaine McGillvary, who scored his 200th Super League try for the club in the win, added: “It is a massive result, considering how the game started.

“We stuck to the game plan. It was hard to get out of our half with the wind against us in the first period, but after the break we blew them away.”

The winger was also full of praise for hat-trick hero Cudjoe.

He added: “Leo stole the show today, he was outstanding. We are 34 this year, but he is playing some of the best rugby he has played, so credit to him.”

Giants now head to Castleford on Friday looking for their seventh straight win. And McGillvary says the squad are not looking further than that match.

“We don’t look too far ahead of ourselves as we know anything can happen,” he said.

“We are on a good run at the moment, but we are wary sides will want to knock us off our perch.”
