Park branded an ‘absolute disgrace’
RESIDENT’S ANGER OVER DEAD FISH AND PILES OF RUBBISH
A RESIDENT has shared his fury after discovering ‘hundreds’ of dead fish laying by a pond.
Jason Fox, who lives in Heckmondwike, shared photographs of Wilton Park, where rubbish was seen piled up in the pond and surrounding areas yesterday morning.
He sarcastically said: “Nice to see the scruffy t **** of the area are respecting the pond at Batley park.
“Whoever is doing this, you’re an absolute disgrace to the community.”
Jason said that he will often walk for up to 50 minutes to the park to clean up the mess.
However, he skipped one week, “and this is how it turned out”, he said.
Jason added: “I met a guy from the environmental agency and he said the dead fish are probably to do with the reduced oxygen levels, one of the big fish has had babies too... I’d say hundreds were there if I was to take a guess.”
Jason says the park has suffered due to lack of care from local residents.
“If more people cared it would never be like this,” he said. “I have complained and complained for years now. Nobody from the local community cares otherwise they would form a group to sort it.
“There is so much wrong with the park these days. The pond, they don’t dredge it anymore, something to do with the algae and stuff been a good food source for wildlife, would be nice even if they did 50 per cent of it.”
After sharing pictures online, a number of Kirklees residents shared their thoughts.
Angela Walshaw said: “Oh this is so sad to see.” Martin Wilson said it is “such a shame”. Odessa Gomersall Cook added: “People just don’t care. Massive shame.”
Claire Waddington said: “I counted five dead fish yesterday. It’s a real shame. So sick of seeing people feeding the ducks bread too. Despite all the signs telling them not to.”
