‘Mum shouldn’t have to put up with this’

LATE-NIGHT NOISE, FLY-TIPPING AND DRUG DEALING PLAGUEING ELDERLY RESIDENT

- By ANDREW ROBINSON

A WOMAN has complained about ‘dreadful’ behaviour at a flats complex in Huddersfield which is upsetting her mum.

The woman says her elderly mum has had to put up with late-night noise from a neighbour as well as household rubbish being dumped near her flat in Glenside Close at Edgerton, Huddersfield, where there are more than 20 flats in separate three-storey blocks.

She also claimed drug dealing in the vicinity of the flats was an ongoing problem, along with people smoking cannabis in the street.

The woman, who has asked not to be named, said the flats used to be just for the over 55s but now younger people had been allowed to move in which she said wasn’t fair on older tenants who cherished their peace and quiet. She branded the antisocial behaviour on ‘low lifes.’

She has complained about the problems to Yorkshire Housing, and the Housing Ombudsman, but feels not enough is being done. She claimed that household waste had been dumped and left for considerable periods of time. Items left near the flats included a settee, a chair, a mattress, cupboards, toys and bags.

“My mum should not have to put up with this,” she said.

“She is feeling vulnerable and it shouldn’t be like that. It’s just awful. People have worked all their lives, and saved for retirement, and this is the type of thing they are having to live with. It is dreadful.

“Mum is in the final stage of her life and I just think it is appalling that these people have no respect for themselves and no respect for anybody else.”

A Yorkshire Housing spokesperson said: “We’re aware of this complaint and our team have been working with everyone involved to resolve things as quickly as we can.

“Glenside Close is a generaluse scheme and is no longer exclusively for the over 55s.

“We’ve spoken to one of our customers about noise nuisance, and we’ve had no further reports from anyone else living at Glenside Close since.

“Concerns raised about drug dealing have been thoroughly investigated and no evidence of this was found. “Anti-social behaviour cases are often a result of complex issues that can take time to resolve.

“We’re sorry this has caused upset for the customer concerned, and we’ll follow it up to see if there is anything else we can do to support them.”
