Police chief slams ‘cowardly attack’ on female officer

COP HIT IN HEAD BY BRICK DURING RAID ON SUSPECTED DRUG FARM

- By LUCY MARSHALL

A West Yorkshire Police officer was left in hospital with a head injury after a thug attacked her in the street.

On Tuesday, March 21, the police woman attended a property in Thornton Lodge Road, Huddersfield, following reports of a suspected cannabis farm.

A thug then threw a brick at her, which resulted in a head injury.

The officer attended hospital for treatment to the injury and was later discharged.

Kirklees District CID have put out the picture as they continue to appeal for information about the incident.

Craig Nicholls, chairman of West Yorkshire Police Federation, spoke out after the officer was attacked.

Mr Nicholls, who represents police constables, sergeants, inspectors, chief inspectors and special constables, said: “The attack on one of my members in Huddersfield is a cowardly attack, It’s completely and utterly abhorrent. We are not punch bags.

“Police officers are assaulted every single day in West Yorkshire and my members deserve to do their jobs free from the threat and fear of violence.

“We don’t accept attacks on people in other professions so why should we accept attacks on police officers for simply doing their jobs?”

He added: “Those who attack emergency workers are attacking us all, society itself. Offenders should be punished most severely as a result.

“As a Federation, we’re proud of the campaign work we’ve done to support and protect our members and we now need the support and protection of the courts, so that if you assault a police officer you can expect to go to prison.” Kirklees District Commander Chief Supt, Jim Griffiths, added: “The matter will be fully investigated, and we will use powers under the Assaults on Emergency Workers Act in 2018 to bring charges against anyone who attacks officers.

“Clearly this has been particularly distressing for the officer concerned and we are providing appropriate support.”

Kirklees District CID are investigating this incident, which occurred at about 8.40pm, and are appealing for anyone with information, or footage that will assist, to contact them on 101 or by using the LiveChat facility on the West Yorkshire Police website.
