‘Tragedy has left us all feeling shocked and angry’

-

FAMILIES and friends have been comforting one another and trying to come to terms with an almost unimaginable tragedy.

The violent deaths of mum-offour Katie Higton, 27, and Steven Harnett, 25, at a property in Harpe Inge, Dalton, Huddersfield, have left residents on the estate feeling a mixture of sadness, despair and anger.

Devastated and heartbroken, local people say they have also been feeling ‘lost’ and bewildered.

On Wednesday morning, groups of neighbours gathered near the scene to offer support to one another while others placed flowers, cards, candles and balloons just outside the police cordon.

More than 30 bunches of flowers have been left by family and friends, along with heartbreaking notes, in memory of Katie and Steven, whose bodies were found on Monday morning.

One local woman told the Examiner: “We are all feeling very shocked by it. And angry. The biggest thing I am feeling is sadness for those kids.”

One woman simply said: “We are feeling lost.”

A mum, who was pushing her son in a pram, said: “We are all feeling sad. I live just around the corner. We are all thinking about those children, the young people. Everyone is feeling sad.”

One card left at the scene said: “Our beautiful little Katie. Can’t describe the heartache... we will forever think of you, our precious girl.”

Another note pinned to a bouquet said: “Katie, may you rest in peace baby girl. You didn’t deserve this. You are so loved and we miss you!”

Both Katie and Steven suffered multiple injuries and died at the scene. Katie has since been

?? ?? described by family as ‘bubbly, outgoing, fun’ and ‘a great mum’. Steven was described as a ‘heart of gold dad’. He leaves behind a daughter.
