WAITING GAME OVER TRANSFERS

- By STEVEN CHICKEN

TERRIERS fans are playing a waiting game on several fronts at the moment with a takeover ongoing and a new manager needed in the dugout ahead of the new campaign, and summer transfers are no different.

So when can we expect the first new arrival to be announced?

It’s worth noting that new arrivals may very well be on hold until that new gaffer is in place, which in turn may require Kevin Nagle’s takeover to get the green light too.

Departing manager Neil Warnock did however suggest that the club may have one or two irons in the fire already on the transfer front, and even if they are indeed waiting for the new owners to arrive (presumably with a viable list of targets of their own), they will be well aware there comes a point where they need to start making moves.

For now, time is still on their side.

At time of writing only three signings have been announced across the entire division, two of which were existing loans that have been made permanent (Xavier Simons to Hull City and Taylor Richards to Queens Park Rangers – the exception is the news that Ashley Barnes will join Norwich City).

History also shows that Huddersfield Town have only announced their first signing earlier than June twice in the past seven years – though in fairness both signings were notably excellent

(Chris Lowe and Matty Pearson), and both preceded seasons where Town reached the play-off final.

When Huddersfield Town announced their first signings in the past seven summer windows 2022:

Will Boyle announced June 6, 2021 – Matty Pearson announced May 20, 2020.

Everything was delayed by Covid that summer, but these players were announced:

Danny Ward announced August 17, 2019 – Tommy Elphick announced June 15, 2018 – Ben Hamer announced as the first brand-new signing on June 1 2017 – Laurent Depoitre announced as first new signing on June 23, 2016.
