Man who stabbed sister to death in street is dad of teenage killer

A MAN murdered his own sister on a Huddersfield street just a week after his teenage son was handed a life sentence for the murder of schoolboy Khayri Mclean.

Roger Harriott, 55, of Manchester Road, Linthwaite, is the father of 17-year-old Jovani Harriott.

Jovani was unmasked as one of the teenage killers of Khayri less than two weeks ago as he was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 18 years.

He was sentenced alongside Jakele Pusey, 15, on May 19.

The pair waited outside North Huddersfield Trust School on September 21 last year before pouncing and stabbing Khayri.

Jakele’s father Roger stabbed his sister Sandra, a ‘bubbly’ 56-year-old, at her home in Ripon Avenue, Fartown, on May 26. She was taken to hospital but sadly died from her injuries.

On Tuesday, he pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court to murdering Sandra, in an horrific attack.

She is fondly remembered by her many friends as a much-loved and highly respected member of Netherall Learning Campus High School’s Inclusion and Student Support team in Rawthorpe.

It was less than two weeks ago that a hearing at Leeds Crown Court heard the younger Harriott and his cousin Pusey “lay in wait” for Khayri as he walked home from school and attacked, with the 15-year-old shouting “Yo, Khayri!” before delivering the fatal blow to his chest.

Jovani was seen on CCTV “twisting in the air” before lunging at Khayri with a large knife and stabbing him in the leg.

Both teenagers ran from the scene and changed their clothes while 15-year-old Khayri collapsed and received medical attention. He was taken to hospital but tragically died.

In a powerful statement, Khayri’s mum Charlie Mclean said her son, a Manchester Utd fan who wanted to be an engineer, had been helpless at the time of the attack.

She said: “The fear he went through when he realised he’d been stabbed and was bleeding to death will stay with me forever.

“I never got to say goodbye. I am living a nightmare. I can hardly function and I have changed as a person. When I wake up, on the occasions I’ve managed to sleep, it hits me like a tonne of bricks again and again. I am in tears on a daily basis.”

She said she asks herself what has been achieved by her son’s death, adding: “What has my son died for? Nobody has won in this situation. I have lost a child and other parents have lost two sons. This violence has to stop, carrying weapons has to stop. I’ve lost my son. I would not wish this upon anyone else.”

Roger Harriott was also convicted in October 2013 of running a brothel opposite the Slubbers Arms, Hillhouse, and was ordered to pay back £55,000 of his ill-gotten gains.

He was found guilty by a jury at Leeds Crown Court the previous year of operating Harmony’s in Willow Lane, for prostitution. He was given a suspended jail sentence and ordered to do 300 hours unpaid work.
