Wildlife move allows home build to start
ANIMAL RELOCATION PAVES WAY FOR 22 NEW AFFORDABLE HOUSES
PREPARATORY work is under way to create 22 affordable homes in Huddersfield after animals on site found a new place to live.
Yorkshire Homes has contracted Urban Group for the development on land off Hart Street, Newsome.
The site is by a former mill but a pond had attracted ducks and fish were also found there.
Both sets have of animals have now either moved themselves or been removed and Urban Group is currently carrying out the remediation ahead of infrastructure works.
The scheme will be a mix of two and three-bed semi-detached affordable homes and spring 2024 is the target date for completion.
Rick Long, from Urban Group, said: “The initial phase of the development has proved to be challenging.
“Prior to commencing works on site, a flock of ducks had taken up residence on the former mill ponds, and a small number of fish had also found their way into the ponds.
“The ducks were given time to leave the ponds of their own volition, whilst the fish were humanely relocated prior to the ponds being drained.
“We look forward to delivering a development which will help to address the shortage of affordable housing within easy reach of Huddersfield town centre.”
Work on site will also involve landscaping, access roads, and sewer installation.
Anthony Askew, development manager at Yorkshire Housing said: “We’re delighted that this project is now under way.
“When complete, this site will bring us closer towards our plans of delivering 8,000 new homes over the next few years.”
