A COUPLES Come Dine with Me winner killed a Huddersfield student while driving high on drugs and without a licence.

Adam Smith, 33, pleaded not guilty throughout the trial after killing promising maths student Oliver Pryde, 18.

Oliver was making his way home after watching England play in the Euro 2020 final when he was killed by Smith.

The tragic incident occurred on Penistone Road, Kirkburton, at 12.20am on July 12, 2021.

Smith was handed a ten-year jail sentence after being found guilty of causing death by careless driving when unfit through drugs, causing death while unlicensed and uninsured, on Monday, at Leeds Crown Court.

He was also banned from driving for nine years.

It has come to light that Smith was a winner of the Channel 4 cooking competition.

He appeared with his then partner, visiting dinner guests across West Yorkshire, beating the other contestants and securing first place. The programme was broadcast on July 18, 2016.

Detective Constable Mark Turner, of the Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “Despite having no driver’s licence or insurance and having consumed nearly twice the legal limit of drugs, Smith chose to get behind the wheel of a car with tragic consequences.

“His actions have left Oliver’s family and friends devastated and deprived Oliver of a promising future.

“I hope this highlights the dangers and consequences of drug driving - we welcome the sentence that has been handed down and hope it acts as a deterrent to others.”

Oliver died just two weeks before his 19th birthday. He had ambitions of becoming a maths teacher after graduating from the University of Huddersfield.

His mother Stacey said he ‘wanted to teach others and inspire the next generation.’
