SPENCER – SOFT BELLY HAS COST TOWN WINS

- By STEPHEN PAGE

HUDDERSFIELD Town defender Brodie Spencer admits his side have had a ‘soft belly’ this season as the Terriers prepare to have their relegation from the Championship confirmed this weekend.

Town head into the final day of their campaign at Ipswich Town on Saturday knowing that their fate is all but sealed, as they sit three points inside the drop zone but with a vastly inferior goal difference to fourth-frombottom Plymouth Argyle.

The Terriers have won just nine games all season and have conceded 75 goals in 45 Championship fixtures this term, with only bottom-of-the-table Rotherham United having let in more.

Town have made a habit of dropping points from winning positions, and Spencer has been left frustrated by the ‘cheap goals’ his side have conceded, which have led to their downfall this year.

“There are so many good, talented players in our squad, but the Championship is an unforgiving league,” the defender told SunSport.

“We’ve been in winning positions but have given away soft goals. We have had a soft belly and given away cheap goals, which have cost us.

“You don’t get away with making mistakes and switching off for five minutes. You get punished.”

Spencer has been one of the club’s bright spots in what has been a very disappointing campaign, with the defender having been an ever-present for the Terriers following his recall from Motherwell in January.

In his breakthrough year, the 19-year-old has made 43 appearances in all competitions this season, which includes four caps for Northern Ireland, and the defender reflected positively on the campaign from a personal point of view.

“They’ve all been great to work with and their doors have always been open for me, which as a youngster is so important,” Spencer said of the four managers he has worked under this season.
