Mum fears for safety of pupils after crash wipes out traffic lights
WOMAN SAYS KIDS HAVE TO RUN ACROSS DUAL CARRIAGEWAY
A HULL mum is terrified for her children’s safety after they have been forced to run across a dual carriageway to get to school.
The traffic lights in Boothferry Road, near Hessle High School, have been out since Sunday evening and worried mum Janine Rex says cars are speeding on the road towards schoolchildren as they cross.
The mum-of-two said: “Kids are having to race over a busy dual carriageway to cross the road to and from Hessle High School as the traffic lights are out in Boothferry Road and there is no alternative route for the kids to take.
“There is only a tiny sign for drivers coming off the road at Humber Bridge to say the lights are out, so they can’t really see it and are coming hurtling down to where the kids are trying to cross.
“I seriously think that someone is going to get killed. It’s disgusting and so frightening. I’m a parent with twin boys at the school and really fear it is an accident waiting to happen to the schoolkids.”
East Riding Council says it is hoping to fix the lights as soon as possible and is urging drivers to be aware in the meantime.
A spokesman for the authority said: “The traffic lights are out at this site on Boothferry Road because of a car accident on Sunday evening, which wiped out all the electronic panels that operate the signals.
“We have had to have replacement parts specially made, which we hope will arrive today so we can install them and get the traffic lights working again as soon as possible.
“We haven’t installed temporary lights on-site as we would have had to narrow the road to one lane and that would have created long delays.
“Until we can get the lights operational again, we would urge motorists to drive carefully, stop at the junction and be aware of other traffic.”
