- Bishop Burton

We take a trip back down memory lane this week to the village of Bishop Burton in the East Riding, to look at a very rural scene.

We have no date for this image, but the photographic paper it is printed on looks as though it dates from the late 1940s or early 1950s.

Having said that, the view appears much older but, sadly, lacks either people or other vehicles that might have helped to date it more accurately.

With the cart stacked high, it is reminiscent of Constable’s famous painting, The Hay Wain, in some respects. The word “wain” is an old name for a farm cart or wagon.

It would also be good to see this late summer view in colour, with its wild grass verges and spaces that are, these days, meticulously kept, maintaining the village’s very picturesque appearance.

The parked vehicles in the modern image, taken by Jim Mitchell late last month, provide a stark contrast between the differing modes of transportation in the images.
