The CCTV footage that could hold the clues to Libby’s death
POLICE HAVE ONLY RELEASED ONE CCTV APPEAL, BUT SO FAR NO ONE HAS YET COME FORWARD
OUT of the gloom in the early hours of a bitterly cold morning, a man is seen running before dropping to a fast walk.
Later a cyclist can be seen riding along and then retuning the same way some ten minutes later. An hour later two people can be seen ambling past.
Who are these people and what were they doing cutting through a lonely north Hull path on a freezing night as snow and ice lay on the ground?
Humberside Police have kept much of their intelligence close to their chest in the Libby Squire investigation.
While much speculation and theorising has flooded social media since the University of Hull student disappeared on February 1, police have only released information they are confident will not jeopardise the investigation.
But there has been one piece of evidence they have shared publicly – CCTV showing four people in Oak Road not long after Libby vanished.
They have made several public appeals around the CCTV but, as yet, no one has come forward with information about the men. Libby Squire disappeared while on a night out with friends
Libby disappeared while on a night out with friends on Thursday, January 31. She was last seen on CCTV sitting on a bench at 12.09am on the Friday in Beverley Road just yards from the end of Haworth Street, after being denied entry to the Welly nightclub.
It is understood she arrived home at 11.29pm that evening, but did not go inside her home.
The police have never revealed why they were so intently focused on Oak Road playing fields during the searches for Libby but clearly they have intelligence which suggests she was there shortly before she disappeared.
Her body was found on Wednesday afternoon in the Humber Estuary, close to Spurn Point.
Pawel Relowicz was arrested in connection with Libby’s abduction a few weeks ago before later being released under investigation and a property in Raglan Street has been regularly searched. He remains a “person of interest” to the investigation.
Now Libby’s body has been found and her death is being treated as homicide, the CCTV footage takes on extra prominence.
Detectives are keen to trace the individuals shown in the CCTV who they say may be possible witnesses.
The footage shows four people in Oak Road close to the junction with Clough Road between 1.13am and 2.34am on the day Libby was last seen on Friday, February 1.
The first clip shows an individual, believed to be in a light coloured T-shirt and dark trousers, running into view in Oak Road and then walking out of shot at 1.13am.
The second clip shows a figure on a bike cycling along Oak Road towards Clough Road at 1.24am and is then seen cycling back up Oak Road at 1.34am.
The third clip shows two people, one who appears to be dressed all in dark clothing and the second in light coloured trousers and a dark coloured top, walking along Oak Road at 2.34am.
The footage of the four men came from CCTV cameras mounted at the entrance to the Croda chemical site.
A path runs from the Oak Road playing fields entrance through on to Oak Road itself which leads to Clough Road. The site entrance is close to where the path merges into Oak Road and is very near to the playing fields.
The four people in the CCTV have all come from the direction of the park heading towards Clough Road.
The CCTV camera is set on a brick building some hundred yards from the entrance to Croda.
On the other side are allotments and further along Oak Road is the Mecca Bingo Hall and Smyths Toy shop.
Detective Superintendent Martin Smalley is leading the investigation into Libby’s disappearance. He said: “These four people are potentially witnesses who we need to identify and speak to as part of the investigation.
