A SENIOR Hull carer has spoken of her relief at measures that have been put in place to protect workers at a Hessle care home.

Amy Jones, 24, looks after residents at Tranby Park, a luxury care home in Hessle, run by Yorkare Homes.

The home - located just off Heads Lane, near Hessle Mount School - has been providing both residential and dementia care since opening in September 2019, and for Amy, the home’s approach to the coronavirus pandemic could not have been better.

While some homes are struggling to gain access to personal protective equipment to keep both themselves and the residents safe, Tranby Park is proving staff with constant supplies, as well as counselling during the crisis.

“Yorkare management have been really great during the coronavirus pandemic and we have got enough PPE and aren’t going short and have a good supply,” she said.

“All of the residents are in high spirits and the care staff are doing well also. We have even been offered counselling to cope with what is going on at the moment and have been given breathing exercises to help us de-stress.

“We also get regular updates from management about coronavirus and I’m really not concerned at all.

“I volunteered to stay over and live in the home with the residents to reduce the risk of spreading the virus to the residents, like many other carers and staff also did.

“I’ve been here two weeks now and I’m getting plenty of breaks and days off and down time as well.”

As the residents are unable to see their family and friends due to the home being closed off to visitors, they have instead been provided with Skype as a means to contact their loved ones, and the home regularly posts updates on Facebook or sends emails to keep people updated on how the residents are getting on.

There is also a wide variety of activities to keep the residents entertained.

“We have a great activities team which are always coming up with new fun and entertaining ideas to keep the residents occupied while they can’t go out like quizzes and karaoke and it’s amazing to see them happy and with a smile on their faces,” said Amy.

“There have been no coronavirus cases and the residents are keeping fit and well and any carers or staff who had any symptoms have been self-isolating to keep our residents safe.

“I’m happy being here at work and keeping a smile on the residents’ faces and I’m contacting my family and grandparents via video call to keep in touch with them until this is all over.”

Jonathan Garton is the operations director for Yorkare Homes and says he could not be more proud of the way his staff have dealt with the coronavirus outbreak.

“As a company, we are so proud of the way our staff have faced the uncertainty of the outbreak, and we are trying to support our teams in any way we can,” he said.

“They will all have their own worries at home, but they continue to attend work and show immense dedication and compassion to our residents.

“We have seen so many touching moments on the care home’s Facebook pages, which show how much the staff care and these have really reassured the families and friends of our residents. We cannot thank our staff enough.”
