EAST Yorkshire has recorded its highest number of deaths since the coronavirus outbreak began, as cases in the region reach 571.

Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital, confirmed yesterday that the total number of deaths has now risen to 48, an increase of seven when compared to the previous day’s figure of 41.

On Saturday, six people died from the virus within 24 hours in East Yorkshire hospitals, the highest number of coronavirus deaths recorded by the trust in one day.

Another death was also included in the total figure, but that had occurred on a previous day.

Previously, the worst days were April 5 and Easter Monday when five deaths were recorded on each day. The figures could still change if and when further deaths are confirmed as relating to Covid-19.

Details of the ages of the victims, or whether they had any underlying health conditions, has not been made available.

Positive cases for the deadly disease in Hull jumped to 241 on Sunday from 225 and from 312 in the East Riding to 330, a total increase of 34 confirmed cases in our region.

On Saturday the region’s death toll stood at 41, seven less than Sunday’s figure.

But the trust has emphasised the leap in deaths does not only represent deaths in the past 24 hours explaining the disparity between the increase of seven in the total number of deaths and the six deaths, which took place on Saturday.

Some deaths, which make up the increase are confirmed following post-mortem examinations on patients who may have died up to two weeks ago.

According to a government release published yesterday as of 9am on Sunday 482,063 tests have concluded, with 21,626 tests on Saturday.

372,967 people have been tested of which 120,067 tested positive.

As of 5pm on Saturday, of those hospitalised in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus, 16,060 have sadly died.

During the Government’s daily briefing yesterday, education secretary Gavin Williamson said that the there are “currently no plans to have schools open over the summer period”.

He added that he cannot yet give a date for schools to reopen.
