Long time before we get to replace this Government

-

THE Prime Minister was in our neck of the woods this week. He was visiting the new Siemens rail site in Goole.

Accompanied by local MP

Andrew Percy, he got to sit in a big digger, stand in a trench for a bit and peer open-mouthed through a large bore concrete pipe. It looked like the worst start to a James Bond film ever.

Boris managed to follow to his chief advisor’s direction with the “build, build, build” mantra, but went decidedly off script when he accused care homes of being to blame for the horrific number of Covid-19 related deaths there.

Almost 20,000 people have died in care homes. Apparently, not because the Government had no coherent plan. Not because they were slow to act at on countless occasions. Not because there was no supply of adequate PPE. Not because general hospitals were directed to discharge patients back into their care homes without coronavirus tests, and not because care homes had insufficient access to testing. And it most certainly wasn’t the Prime Minister’s fault, was it?

Well, one chief executive of a leading care charity might beg to differ. He branded Boris Johnson as “clumsy and cowardly”, for trying to blame brave, hardworking carers, who risk their own lives to protect vulnerable people.

Anyone who has been paying attention will know that clumsy and cowardly, are perhaps two of Mr Johnson’s finer qualities.

Unfortunately for us all, it will be four long years before we get the chance to replace this callous and careless Government.

Boris, though, may well be out of a job long before then.

MAY I use your Mailbox to support the care home my son lived in for several years suffering with Alzheimer’s.

In December 2019, he was treated for a chest infection. During that time, his brother and I had face-toface contact with him. Over Christmas, we both were ill with flu-like symptoms.

My son in the nursing home passed away on New Year’s Day 2020. On his death certificate was respiratory failure.

His brother and myself continued to be ill into the new year.

Recently, we realised we had the symptoms of coronavirus.

We believe it was around in November 2019.

The care home staff, and us, did not know the virus existed. The staff took care of my son brilliantly.

I must urge everyone to wear face masks, and be aware they could have the disease and not know it.

Even through the lockdown is eased, it could be hovering, waiting to come back. Please obey the rules, and don’t help it to come back.
