No relegation is fair, but door should not close on promotion

-

It’s great to have a return to training date and as players we can look forward to getting back to work. I’ve not seen the boys for a while so I’m looking forward to seeing them. It was good to them all on a Zoom chat the other day but it was a bit too serious for our liking. We wanted to have a bit of banter as usual but the physio muted us so it was a bit difficult!

I’m looking forward to getting back and it’ll be nice for a bit of normality to resume and to get a ball in my hands again. It’s go time now.

We had a taste of what we can expect next week before we broke up, when we had to train in small groups and clean all the balls and training equipment after they’d been used.

We’re not sure yet whether we’ll be allowed to have showers at the ground. Footballers are having to get in their cars and go home again.

I don’t know to what extreme the measures will be this time around. It’s just important for everyone to stay safe and use common sense, I suppose.

Our return means I have to move back over to Hull away from my family. We’re going to be playing a lot of games and there probably won’t be enough time to go home in between. We’ll have to recover, train and play again.

It’ll be a testing period and a tough one. That’s why I kind of agree with the no relegation proposal.

You plan things differently at the start of the year. Some players will potentially struggle with the new circumstances and it’s not fair for them to lose contracts on the back of that with the goalposts being changed.

The quicker this season is over the better for everyone. It will just give us a sense of normality with recruitment and building towards a bit more of a normal season next year. For the RFL and Sky Sports, we just need to get the games boxed off and get out of there.

While I agree with scrapping relegation, I don’t think it’s fair to block promotion. If you look at the Championship, there’s three or four teams that do want to come up. The rest of them are happy being part-time teams which is fine but they shouldn’t be restricting the progress of the ambitious clubs.

As much as the world is a bit crazy at the moment, you can’t stop a team progressing when they’re funding it and wanting to do well. I don’t know how you’d come up with a format to see who would get promoted but the door has to be open for sure.

Super League clubs should split the money with another team next year as part of the bargain. Toronto don’t get any of the money anyway so clubs have got a bigger portion this year. It’d be only right for them to divvy up more of the pie to a team coming up.

I’m probably not educated to make the call but I think that would be the right thing to do.
