PLANS for a new primary school in Kingswood have been given the go-ahead.

The new-look Broadacre Primary will be built on the same Wawne Road site as the existing school of the same name.

The new school will provide places for 630 pupils – 210 more than the current school.

In addition, there will be a 52-place nursery and a ten-place facility for special needs pupils who have autism.

As well as the new buildings, there e will be a 71-space car park with h the main access to the site via Amy y Johnson Way.

The development has been prompted by the huge expansion of new housing in the immediate area.

Councillor Charles Quinn, who represents the area, area moved approval for the scheme at this week’s Hull City Council planning committee.

He saids the recent inclusion in the design of a drop-off point inside the grounds for parents taking and collecting their children from the new school was a welcome move.

“It’s worth remembering that when this school will be fully occupied, there will be close to 700 children attending.

“When you add in the nursery places, the autism unit and staff and visitors on top of that, you could be looking at 1,000 people coming in and out of this site each day.

“It’s going to be a really big primary school and if it did not have adequate parking facilities on site and did not have an inside drop-off and pick-up point, I would probably move refusal, but I’m really satisfied with what has been proposed.”

Cllr Quinn said he also welcomed the proposed use of brick and stone as the main building materialsl for the new school rather than cladding, which he said “would stick out quite badly”.

He said using traditional masonry was suitable because the school was surrounded on three sides by new housing.

Construction is expected to start later this year and all works are expected to be completed by mid-2022.
