SIX secondary schools across East Yorkshire have ranked in the top 500 list by The Sunday Times, with two of them named among the best in the north of England.

In Hull, Hymers College ranked ninth in the best independent secondary schools across the north.

Beverley High School also enjoyed success in the 2021 list as the allgirls school placed eighth for state secondaries.

The Sunday Times’ Parent Power list ranked the 500 highest-achieving schools in the UK, based on their recent examination results. The results were then also broken up into regions.

This year, schools were rated based on last year’s exam results, with an article explaining: “We have not used 2020 examination outcomes due to the disruption caused by the pandemic, but with examination results and rankings going back to 2010 in many cases, this is the most comprehensive resource covering elite school performance in the UK.”

The other four schools that made it on to the national league list, including the above named are:

■ Wyke Sixth Form College at 41

■ Beverley High School at 196

■ Hymers College at 210

■ Hessle High School at 232

■ Pocklington School at 311

■ South Hunsley School and

Form College in Melton at 412

Wyke Sixth Form College, coming in at 41 on the list, is one of Hull and the East Riding’s most popular colleges.

It boasts four separate buildings,

Sixth each housing different subjects and amenities that are linked together by the outside, landscaped area which provides an extensive social space.

It welcomed around 2,300 students this year and competition for places was tough, with some pupils being turned away.

At Beverley High School, serving 863 girls, ranked at 196 nationally, 18.2 per cent of pupils achieved a grade of 67.4 per cent at A level of an A*- B and 30.3 per cent achieved a GCSE A*/A meaning a 9/8/7.

Hymers College at 210 in the list is a private school that first opened in Hull in 1893 as a school for boys. It soon established itself as one of the leading schools in the north for its academic, sporting and musical achievements.

Hessle High School came in at 232 on the list and describes itself as an inclusive school where students have many opportunities to develop their skills and abilities, fostering examination success and offering all students a relevant learning experience for their future.

Pocklington School came in at 311 on the list and is a private day and boarding school for boys and girls aged between three and 18.

Finally, South Hunsley School and Sixth Form College in Melton came in at 412 on the list and serves 2,144 pupils aged between 11 and 18.

Parent Power is acknowledged as the most authoritative survey of the country’s best schools. The rankings in the league tables are determined by pre-pandemic examination results from 2019 and use A-level, GCSE, IB, Pre-u, Advanced Higher, Higher and National 5 outcomes.
