Bowled over by cricketing items

REPRESENTI­NG one of the last great collection­s of cricketing memorabili­a left in private hands, an online sale of Yorkshire and England legend Sir Geoffrey Boycott mementoes realised a total of £207,625 at Christie’s London.

The sale of 130 lots followed the career path of Sir Geoffrey through his illustriou­s sporting life and attracted interest from around the globe, due to his iconic sporting and recordbrea­king achievemen­ts.

Sir Geoffrey said: “I am really pleased that the auction of my personal cricketing collection was so well received.

“Knowing that these items have gone to people who will treasure them and enjoy them as much I have over the years, is all I could have hoped for. The fact that they can now be seen in the light of day instead of being in boxes in my attic is fantastic.

“I am humbled by the interest shown and wish to thank all those people who bid and those who bought a small piece of sporting history in the Christie’s auction.”

Results highlights included Sir Geoffrey’s 100th 100 bat, that had an estimate of £30,000£50,000 and realised £43,750.

Viv Richard’s West Indies Maroon Cap, inscribed ‘V. Richards 1980’. estimate £5,000-£8,000, realised £10,625 while Sir Geoffrey’s England Caps, one ceremonial, embroidere­d with ‘422/1’ representi­ng Geoffrey Boycott’s cap numbers for Test Match Cricket and One Day

Internatio­nal cricket went for £11,250 against an estimate of £2,000-£3,000.
